Letters to a Battered Woman: What do I do now? Overview
Congratulations, you have finally done it. You have left your abusive partner, you are finally in a safe environment and now you can do whatever you want with your life. Sounds positive? Well it is but all I can remember when my life had finally settled down after leaving my abusive ex was “what on earth do I do now?”
Everybody goes through their split in a different way. Some of you might have planned an escape and followed it through. Others of you might have been like me who basically saw one tiny window of opportunity and leapt at it. In my case I had been loaned my husbands car to go 100 meters down the road. He had tried to kill me twice that day and I must have reached breaking point. Instead of going straight back home, I took off as fast as the car could carry me to the police station, 20 minutes drive away. By the time I got there the car had been reported stolen by my husband.
Anyway things worked out. Although I had always believed that the Women’s Refuge was for women who were in a worse condition than I was, they took me and my children in without question. Those wonderful women helped me to apply for benefits, find a small house in another township and even furnished it for me with some basic items. Within a month I was housed, with food and power and all of the survival items. I even had a small and rickety car. I was very lucky.
But of course there comes a day when those wonderful people have to move on to other cases; domestic violence is a growth industry in our communities. I was safe, my children were housed and fed and were looking forward to going to school once the summer holidays were over. It was then that I started to think about what I was going to do with the rest of my life. And my mind was just blank.
Fast forward twelve years and I have a successful career as a writer, I am in my third year of study as an artist, I have grown children and even grandchildren. I have been happily married to my third husband for ten years and my life has never been so good. But when I was sitting in my little house all those years ago – staring out of the window feeling hopeless and alone; my mind blank after the horror of and stress of the trauma I had gone through, I could never have imagined that my life could be this good.
This book and others in this series are part of my efforts to help you – survivors of domestic abuse and violence to create a new life for yourself – one where you are happy, safe and fulfilled – it is possible, you just have to go about it one step at a time.
In this book you will learn how to start the healing process, why it is important to start giving yourself permission to live and life, and how you can start to dream of the future you deserve.
